Phillip Island
The garden is enclosed. The floors don't mind a morning at the beach. There's space to rinse paws when you come home from the coast. Bringing your dog to Phillip Island shouldn't feel complicated — and here, it doesn't.
Verandah Retreat is a whole-house stay in the heart of Cowes, 200 metres from the beach. Mornings begin with a walk to the shore. Afternoons settle into the garden. Evenings organise themselves around the fire. It is, from the first hour, the kind of place that feels like it has always been yours — for both of you.

Dog-friendly accommodation in
Cowes, Phillip Island
Verandah Retreat is dog-friendly accommodation in Cowes, Phillip Island — a whole-house holiday rental 200 metres from the beach. Guests have the property entirely to themselves: the kitchen, the long table, the wide verandah, the enclosed garden. No shared spaces, no other guests.
The house sleeps up to eight, making it well suited to families, groups, and anyone who travels with a dog and wants space to actually settle in. Linen, timber, a cast iron fire already set when you arrive. Things that age well and don't mind a dog living in them for a few days.
The dog bed is already there when you arrive. There is somewhere to rinse paws after the beach. The floors handle a sandy, wet animal without fuss. This is what genuinely dog-friendly accommodation looks like in practice — not a line in the listing, but a stay built around it.
Secure, enclosed,
and all theirs.
The garden at Verandah is fully enclosed — secure enough for your dog to move freely without a lead. Space to roam, find a patch of afternoon sun, and be a dog. It is one of the things guests mention most.
In the warmer months, the doors open wide and the garden becomes part of the house. In winter, it is the return point after windswept walks — the place where paws get rinsed and coats come off before settling in front of the fire.

Dog-friendly beaches
near Verandah Retreat
Phillip Island has some of the best dog-friendly coastline in Victoria, and several of the best beaches are within easy reach of the house.
Cowes Beach
200 metres from the front door — a two-minute walk that becomes part of the daily rhythm of a stay here. At low tide the foreshore widens into long, flat sand ideal for early morning walks before the town wakes. Dogs on-lead in designated sections. Wide horizons, salt air, and the quiet that belongs to the hour before breakfast.
Ventnor Beach
A smaller, sheltered beach on the island's north-eastern side that most visitors don't find. Dogs tend to have it almost entirely to themselves outside of summer. Quieter, unhurried, and worth the short drive.
Smiths Beach
On the south coast, facing Bass Strait — wide, exposed, and beautiful in the way that open-ocean beaches are beautiful. The space here is extraordinary for dogs and people alike. Check current council signage for off-lead areas and seasonal restrictions before visiting.
Always confirm leash rules and seasonal restrictions on arrival, as these vary by beach and time of year.Dog-friendly walks
on Phillip Island
Beyond the beaches, the island has walks worth building a day around.
The Cowes foreshore
An easy morning route east from the house toward the jetty — flat, low-tide sand, the town gradually falling away behind you. No agenda required.
Cape Woolamai
A clifftop circuit around the island's southern headland: pink granite, Bass Strait surf below, views in every direction. Dogs on leads. Two hours and worth every minute.
The Nobbies boardwalk
Follows the coastline at the island's western tip, with the fur seal colony visible offshore and seabirds overhead. Dogs on leads in keeping with wildlife protections. One of the island's best walks.

What a stay
looks like.
The morning starts early — not because anyone set an alarm, but because the dog did.
Low tide at Cowes, first light, the foreshore wide and almost empty. He is ahead of you already, nose to the waterline, entirely focused on the immediate and the real. This is the version of the island that day visitors rarely see.
Back to the house. Coffee. Eggs. He finds his patch of morning sun on the verandah and settles while breakfast happens around him.
Mid-morning, a drive south to Smiths Beach — wide and cold and beautiful. The walk takes twice as long as planned. Beach walks with a dog always do.
Lunch at the house, or a long one somewhere local. The Phillip Island Winery has dog-friendly outdoor seating and an unhurried afternoon quality that suits everyone at the table, including him.
Home before dark. The fire already set. He dries off in front of it. The evening takes its time.
This is what a dog-friendly stay on Phillip Island can feel like. Not managed. Simply included.
